No se descomponen muy r\u00e1pido\u201d, explica Jennifer DeBruyen, profesora de Ingenier\u00eda de Biosistemas y Edafolog\u00eda de la Universidad de Tennessee. Los dise\u00f1adores italianos Raoul Bretzel y Anna Citelli podr\u00edan tener la soluci\u00f3n. La llaman Capsula Mundi<\/em> (c\u00e1psula del mundo, en lat\u00edn) y es un ata\u00fad org\u00e1nico en forma de huevo<\/a> que tambi\u00e9n puede utilizare para ceniza<\/p>\n

La idea de la Capsula Mundi<\/em> surgi\u00f3 en el 2003, cuando la pareja vio toneladas de muebles destruidos despu\u00e9s de la famosa feria de dise\u00f1o Salone del Mobile<\/em> (Sal\u00f3n del Mueble) de Mil\u00e1n.<\/p>\n

\u201cEra una gran competencia por dise\u00f1ar cosas nuevas, pero casi nadie se preocup\u00f3 por el futuro impacto de esas cosas o por si alguien las usar\u00eda realmente\u201d, dice Bretzel.<\/p>\n

\u201cComenzamos a pensar proyectos que pudieran tener un aspecto ambiental. La muerte es parte de nuestra vida pero en las ferias de dise\u00f1o a nadie le importa eso porque es un aspecto de nuestra vida que no queremos mirar. No queremos pensar en la muerte como parte de la vida\u201d.<\/p>\n

La ciencia detr\u00e1s del invento<\/span><\/p>\n

Los dise\u00f1adores presentan ahora la primera versi\u00f3n de su producto, que solo sirve para cenizas. Un modelo posterior servir\u00e1 tambi\u00e9n para cuerpos, que ser\u00e1n encapsulados en posici\u00f3n fetaL.<\/p>\n

Primero, las bacterias del suelo descomponen el biopl\u00e1stico y luego las cenizas entran gradualmente en contacto con el suelo, sin cambiar dr\u00e1sticamente su balance qu\u00edmico.<\/p>\n

Pero aunque la inhumaci\u00f3n de cenizas puede ser ecol\u00f3gica y amigable con el medio ambiente, la cremaci\u00f3n tambi\u00e9n tiene sus detractores. \u201cEs un proceso que demanda mucha energ\u00eda\u201d, afirma DeBruyen.<\/p>\n

Si bien sembrar una semilla encima de la c\u00e1psula puede parecer un concepto atractivo, Jacqueline Aitkenhead-Peterson, profesora del Departamento de Ciencias del Suelo y el Cultivo de la Universidad de Texas A&M, sugiere que se utilicen \u00e1rboles m\u00e1s maduros.<\/p>\n

\u201cComo el cuerpo se va a deshacer en un a\u00f1o en un ambiente de sepultura, los nutrientes son liberados al suelo muy r\u00e1pido, as\u00ed que la clave ser\u00eda plantar encima un \u00e1rbol de tama\u00f1o decente. Capturar esos nutrientes tambi\u00e9n es importante para proteger las aguas subterr\u00e1neas\u201d, explica la experta.<\/p>\n

\u00bfPero beneficia de verdad todo esto al medio ambiente? DeBruyen cree que s\u00ed: \u201cEl problema con los entierros tradicionales es que son completamente anaer\u00f3bicos. Los restos son sepultados en lo profundo y sellados en un ata\u00fad. Hay mucha degradaci\u00f3n incompleta en ese proceso\u201d.<\/p>\n

\u201cEstas c\u00e1psulas pueden ayudar a mantener algo de flujo de ox\u00edgeno en el sistema. Adem\u00e1s, le aportan carbono a todo el sistema (por el biopl\u00e1stico). Uno de los obst\u00e1culos y desaf\u00edos que plantea la descomposici\u00f3n de un cuerpo humano es que es muy rico en nitr\u00f3geno y, por eso, los microbios que tratan de descomponer todo ese nitr\u00f3geno necesitan algo de carbono para equilibrar el proceso\u201d.<\/p>\n
